Explanation of Stanford Community Base Project

The nature of the project is the conversion of the disused toilet block on Church Hill Stanford le Hope into a Community Base. The building is on two floors but due to the design both floors are at ground level. The upper floor entrance being level with Church Hill and the lower floor entrance being level with The Sandpits Car Park.

The upper floor is to be used as a meeting place for the Stanford Forum Executive, it is also to be made available to other local organizations for their private meetings. The Police intend to use the base as a surgery for Stanford le Hope and also some where to keep literature for local distribution. It is also envisaged that other organizations ( CAB, MIND, TRUST,) and the like may wish to use it as a surgery. The Stanford Forum will open the facility as often as possible for local residents to drop in and discuss local issues with the Forum. However it is hoped that in the long term the facility may allow for external funding to be obtained so as to allow the Base to be operated on a regular basis.

The lower floor is to be used to run a monthly youth outreach project utilising the Sandpits Car Park as a venue ( ideas for attractions include model car racing, Bar-B-Qs and the like). The local neighbourhood policing team have agreed to become involved with the outreach projects.

We have secured a five year lease from Thurrock Council at a favourable rent and the fabric of the property has been repaired. This was achieved with money from last years Forum Budget £3,000 and £2,500 from the Safer Thurrock Partnership. The base now needs to be fully decorated inside, and an internal partition wall erected to the upper floor. Office equipment for the upper floor needs to be purchase along with racking for the lower floor.

The total estimated cost of the project is £10,500 of which we have already received £5,500. We have already obtained some income by selling advertising space on our website, and we envisage that groups using the facility would make donations to the Forum.

We feel that this represents real value for money, not only does it make use of a building that has been left empty for nearly 15 years, it also gives a contact point for local residents and the police and provides a youth facility. We have already approached Tesco Extra in the town centre and The Way to The Raj who have both said they would be only to happy to help out when we start running the Bar-B-Qs. This demonstrates the willingness of some local businesses to become involved in the community, which can not be a bad thing.
